So, you would like to start a container garden but have apprehensions as to its costs? Well, its time to put your fears aside; for, container gardens can be started with a very low budget. Great container gardening ideas need not be create a big hole in your pocket!

The first step to begin a very low budget container garden is to look for cheap yet sturdy plants. Herbs are a wonderfully cheap way to begin your container garden as they do not cost the earth and yet are sturdy and easy to maintain. Either offline or on the net, prices of your chosen plants may vary, so, do your homework before parting with your cash at the first store. Buying from supermarkets instead of garden centers will help save money. In a similar vein, choose your plants carefully in accordance with the peculiarities of your container garden space, i.e., the amount of sunlight/shade which comes there etc. which should match with your plants’ needs.

The second step is to hunt around for freebies; abandoned plots, yard sales, renovated lots may yield good results but always remember to ask before you take. Requesting friends, family or colleagues for spare cuttings or seeds will be a big money-saver.
 
The third and the most basic mistake which novices tend to make is in thinking that containers have to cost a bomb and they give up the idea of container gardening even before they have begun because of this budget constraint!  What they don’t realize is that for container gardens, the types of pots are limited only by your own imagination. Your garbage bin or attic can yield great containers in the shape of old bottles, jars, crates, egg trays, boots, sink etc.

Just ensure that you make drainage holes at the bottom of these containers for the water to drain out and plug them slightly with a piece of gravel or stone. Paint them, jazz them up and you can have your individualistic containers. Or, if digging out old, broken stuff is not really your type of thing, you can settle for plastic containers which are the cheapest. Pick them up from your local supermarket; they come in a variety of colors with matching saucers to keep the drained water off the floor.

You can pick up cheap compost in bulk from your local council or municipality or you can learn to make your own. Follow these guidelines, adapt them as you go along and you can end up with a beautiful low budget container garden!
