How To Build A Compost Bin Yourself
Once you understand the purpose of a compost bin and its meaning it will become quite easy to build a Compost bin.
Compost bins can be made in five different methods namely Worm compositing, soil incorporation, Heaps, holding units and turning units. The most popular and common method amongst these is worm compositing leaving aside heaps and soil incorporation process in which there is no requirement of a separate bin.
A container made from wood, wire screen, masonry or plastic can be used for the common style of composting. A simple square slatted wood enclosure or a sophisticated tumbler in which the pile can be turned for aeration purposes can be regarded as Containers compost bins.
Materials required for making a wooden bin of standard size are a sheet of 4 feet by 8 feet sheet of ½ inch exterior plywood, a 2 x 4 lumber of 12 feet length and a 2 x 4 lumber of 16 feet length, Galvanized nails of 6d and 16d in adequate quantity, 2 galvanized door hinges and few plastic sheets which are to be used for putting over and under the bin.
With the help of the above materials, a rectangular box and its lid are made and then the hinges are attached at each end of the inside back of the bin and at corresponding back edge of the lid frame. This keeps the lid in upright position when it is opened.
After making it, it is advisable to apply two coats of varnish in order to increase the longevity of the bin. For drainage purpose, twelve holes of ½ inches are made at the bottom of the bin after which it is ready for use.
You may place plastic sheets over and under the bin if required. For every 250 grams of food wastes produced per day, half kilogram of worms is required. For preparation of bedding for worms you need brown leaves, moistened shredded newspaper or moistened shredded cardboard and peat moss.
Managing garbage disposal problem gainfully and increasing farm produce has been made possible with introduction of compost in gardening. It also avoids use of harmful chemical fertilizers. Compost helps in converting the ammonia present in the plants into healthy proteins and also increases the water holding capacity of the plant thus softening the plant material.
