How to choose containers for your indoor plants

Container gardening is one of the best ways to bring plant life indoors and to add a bit of color and greenery to cramped up indoor apartment spaces.  However, it is not enough to buy plenty of plants and stick them anyhow in pots and expect them to thrive. Although almost any type of pot or container will do for indoor gardening, it helps if the right containers are chosen as it will not only add to the plant life but also enhance the beauty of the flowers or plants.
Wooden containers look the most attractive although these also tend to be the most expensive. However, they are extremely durable, making them a sound one-time expense and they are very good for growing perennial plants. Large plants or herbs thrive in wooden containers and since they look very attractive, they are best placed in conspicuous locations around the house. One should only be careful as to not to go in for pre-treated wood, especially on the inside as chemicals may leach onto the soil eventually harming the plants.
Plastic pots are the cheapest and easily available even in supermarkets but they are not very durable and too much exposure to the elements may lead to them cracking and warping. Also, they certainly do not look as good as wooden, ceramic or terracotta pots. They may be a good choice for long trailing plants where the overhanging leaves can camouflage the exterior of the containers.
Terracotta pots are also quite economical and they definitely look prettier than plastic pots. But, the catch here is that these pots can be quite delicate and are prone to breakage. So, if you have to move around your containers quite a bit, plastic ones may be a safer option. Terracotta pots come in very attractive designs and can range from the basic pot to elaborately designed ones complete with swags and curls etc.
Ceramic containers are another very attractive option for growing indoor plants. These come in various colors and designs and can really add to the beauty of the space.
You need not be bound by only these types of containers as you can use any type of old, discarded bottles, soda cans, milk jugs, and buckets as containers for growing plants. The only thing to bear in mind is that there should be holes at the bottom of these converted containers for adequate drainage.
Choosing the right type of containers will help maximize the plant life and the right amount of watering will ensure that the plants do not die.
