Container gardening is a fast-growing hobby as more and more people find themselves living in small city spaces with no outlet for outdoor gardening. Of course, certain plants do not grow as well in containers as in outside soil and here we will take a look at some of the best possible choices for plants in containers.
One of the most increasingly popular choices for container gardening is growing herbs in pots and this is not restricted to health food enthusiasts or the culinary experts only. There is something inherently charmingly rustic about being able to pluck off fresh herbs straight from your kitchen window-sill perhaps, just when you need them. Plus, herbs are a good way to start off your container kitchen garden as they are amongst the easiest to grow and they also do not require large pots.
Some good suggestions for container herb gardens include basil, chives, thyme and mint. Bear in mind that most herbs require plenty of sunshine, moist soil and the right amount of watering as over watering or clogged drainage holes in pots will cause the roots to die out.
Vegetables too can easily be grown in containers with the correct mix of soil, watering and the right container. Not all vegetables though can grow well in pots; potatoes, for instance, do not grow well in pots as they require plenty of underground space. But, tomatoes, eggplants, lettuce, spinach, squash, cucumbers, peppers, beans can be grown in containers.

Vegetables which tend to grow very large, like corn are best avoided in containers as also large melons and certain types of tomatoes. Plum and cherry tomatoes do well in pots. Citrus fruits like lemons lend themselves to container gardening. Imagine inhaling the fragrance of lemons from your own pot! For vegetable container gardening especially, the pot should be at least 6 inches in depth and 10 inches in width.
Setting up your container garden can be a lot of fun as you can add various flowers and plants to add color and beauty to your indoor space. Flowers like Browallia which are desert bluebells grow well in almost any condition and are a good choice as filler plants. Coleus is a popular choice as it sprouts leaves in lovely colors like bronze, gold, yellow, red etc.

Periwinkle has lovely flowers in white and pink and makes a dainty addition to your indoor garden.
Having your container garden is not difficult with the right choice of plants and the outdoors can be bought indoors with just a little bit of proper care.
