Herb garden Herbs For The Cook

Herb garden Herbs For The Cook

Herb garden herbs can make up an entire lovely herb garden for show and in use in your home. The herbs most used by cooks in cooking tend to be the ones that have the most aromatic smells. The smell of cooking herbs has been known to be calming and to make people feel at home. This is because of the comforting smell they have.

Growing herb garden herbs for the cook can be quite easy. All you need to do is obtain the correct size container, which matches how large you want your herb garden to be. It is recommended you start off small and then work you way up to a larger garden as your ability progresses. This is because many herbs can grow in a larger abundance than you may anticipate. Plus, some herbs have a tendency to take over an herb garden very easily.

After obtaining the correct size containers, invest in some quality potting soil. This will be mixed with dirt and sand in order to create a proper seedbed. You will also want to buy seeds for the herb garden herbs you have chosen for your garden. Some of the best herbs for the use of cooking are chives, thyme, tarragon, oregano, rosemary, and sage.

Herb garden herbs for the cook are quite easy to grow and maintain. To begin with they just need to be planted a couple of inches beneath the topsoil placed in your container. Once you have done this, place your herb garden containers in a place where it may get the appropriate amount of light. You also want to make sure the plants get plenty of air. This may mean occasionally taking an oscillating fan and blowing it at your herb garden on a low setting to simulate the effects of the wind.

Be sure to keep the soil your herbs are planted in moist, but not too moist. You will also want to be very regular with your schedule of thinning out herbs that begin to grow rapidly in your herb garden. Take careful care to sometimes separate the root systems. Digging into the root systems makes this possible. This will keep faster growing herbs from taking over the other herbs and choking them out of the herb garden.

Once you have grown the herbs you have planted for your herb garden then you will want to use them in cooking projects. Pick chives to add flavor to potatoes or in butter to make an herbed butter. Thyme is good for soups, meats, and winter dishes. Tarragon is good for meats, rice, and pasta dishes. Oregano is great in Italian dishes. Rosemary is good with potatoes and chicken. Sage is great for making stuffing and in meat dishes such as pork.

After harvesting your herbs you may want to store some of them for later months use. This can be done by freeze drying them and placing them in an airtight container to keep until you are ready to use them.

Bulk Organic Herbs Found In The Mediterranean Kitchen

Avid home cooks and restaurant chefs know that it makes sense to keep a good supply of bulk organic herbs and spices on hand for cooking.  Not only will you have the organic herbs in bulk that you need for preparing your great recipes, but you will also save money with bulk purchases.  The Mediterranean kitchen keeps on hand a tasty assortment of bulk organic herbs for cooking those fantastic and delicious recipes found in the sunny countries bordering the Mediterranean Ocean.

You will soon discover that most of the bulk organic herbs and spices favored in the Mediterranean kitchen are often grown in that warm region of the world.  You will find a spectrum of bulk organic herbs used in this cuisine that include such favorites as allspice, caraway seed, cinnamon, cloves, dillweed, garlic, mint, oregano, parsley, black pepper, basil, bay leaves, coriander, cumin, fennel seed, juniper berries, marjoram, crushed red pepper flakes, rosemary and thyme.  Keeping these organic herbs in bulk on hand in your kitchen allows you the flexibility to create wonderful dishes on the spur of the moment, based on what looks good at the farmers’ market or outside in your own vegetable garden that day.

Restaurants featuring Greek, Italian and French cuisines will also want to keep wholesale organic bulk herbs at the ready for food preparation.  Wholesale organic bulk herbs can be purchased by anyone with a company where they are used in foods that will be resold to the public, or by herbal suppliers who offer dried herbs for sale to the public.

Once you have these glorious bulk organic herbs in your kitchen, what can you do with them?  As it turns out, plenty when it comes to creating authentic and flavorful Mediterranean dishes.  One easy dish to start with that is sure to be a hit with your family is Greek Roasted Chicken.  Wash and then place the chicken in a pan, rub it all over with olive oil, and then sprinkle with lemon juice and dried bulk organic herbs and spices such as oregano, salt and pepper.  Roast it slowly over low heat in your oven until the skin is crispy and golden, and in the last hour throw some sliced potato wedges into the pan.  Now you can feast like the Greeks do.

There are Italian recipes that also use these spices.  Bulk herbs such as oregano, parsley, salt and pepper are used for seasoning roasted vegetable salads with spices.  Bulk seasonings can be used to enhance the taste of roasted sweet peppers, tomato and garlic cloves, and anchovies can be added for an additional salty flavor.  The bulk organic herbs of crushed red pepper flakes, salt and pepper, along with lemon peel are used to create a wonderful green sauce from fresh parsley that can be used as an accent to cooked meats as well as over pasta.

These are just a small sampling of the variety of different ways you can use organic herbs in bulk to prepare delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

In this article Anne Harvester writes about bulk organic herbs.

Organic Herbs – Grow Herbs Organically In 3 Easy Steps

Organic Herbs – Grow Herbs Organically In 3 Easy Steps

If you are a cook or a chef, or just simply enjoy tasty food that is seasoned with herbs, one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is to begin to grow your own herbs. At the local supermarket, purchasing herbs on a regular basis, especially if you use them frequently, can be very expensive. However, with a simple plan of action, and a few solid tips, you can begin to grow your own organically grown herbs in the comfort of your home or outside if you have the space to do so. Here are three easy steps that you can take in order to begin growing organic herbs without all of the hassle and price when buying them at your local store.

First of all, you will need a few things in order to begin. You can purchase most of these things and use them for years without needing to invest again or at least for some time. Other things must be purchased on a regular basis and they are low cost, especially when compared against the yields that you will have from your organic herbs that will be grown in a natural and healthy way.

You will of course need some organic fertilizer. This can be purchased at your local nursery or if you are an avid gardener already, or someone that does worm composting on the side, you can use some of your freshly produced organic fertilizer for this process. In fact, it would be better if you make the fertilizer yourself as homegrown compost seems to work much better for most people.

If you do not have your own compost pile in your backyard, but you do not want to buy non organic fertilizer, you should probably begin this process well before the planting season begins. The process that I am talking about is creating a compost pile or buying a compost bin so that you can begin to utilize the natural chemical processes that will occur via the composting process or you can procure some red worms and place them in a bin specifically designed for vermicomposting in order for the worms to begin creating compost for you.

Another possibility is that you can use what are called fish emulsions as an alternative to the composting process or purchasing compost outright. Fish emulsions are also a product that you can purchase from almost any horticulture resource or online store and have it sent to your home in no time at all.

You will also need some planting containers, a couple of watering cans that you can use to water your herbal crops, a soil scoop or gardeners hand fork, some mulch and of course the herb seed you are going to use in order to grow the organic herbs of your choice.

Before planting, also realize that some herbs are in dire need of sunlight on an almost full time basis whereas others prefer partial shade. Also, some herbs are suitable for growing in small pots that you can sit in your windowsill whereas others prefer to be planted in larger containers. Your other alternative is to plant them in the natural environment outside but that of course depends upon where you live and the climate that is best suited for each plant. So whether you are growing basil, chives, or parsley, make sure that the place that you will be growing them is best suited for their optimal growth.

The next thing you must do is mix your soil. By taking soil from the ground perhaps from an old garden area and placing it in the pots, you will now need to mix in your fertilizer in the form of compost from either your compost pile or the worm bin, or if you decided to purchase something else such as fish emulsion, simply mix that according to directions into water in order to get the proper mix for your herbal plants to grow. Most herbs prefer to be slightly undernourished than overfertilized.

Once done, plant each of your seeds and make sure that you label what each one is. Make sure that you place each pot or container in the appropriate area so that each herb receives the proper amounts of sunlight once it begins to grow as well as the correct seed germinating temperature. This process to prepare your herb garden should take just a few hours depending upon how many herbs you are deciding to grow and how long it takes you to mix your soil for each potting container. You should also check on the pH of the soil in order to determine if it has the proper balance. There are many pH testing tools that you can purchase on the cheap that will ensure that the acidic and base levels are at the proper level. Most herbs prefer a slightly acidic ph to grow in.

Finally, it is time to write your daily schedule in order to take care of your plants in the seedling stage. By creating a check list of the things you need to do such as checking pH levels, watering, making sure that they are in the proper areas and at the proper temperatures, this will ensure that your herbal crops will grow to completion in record time and you can begin enjoying the organic herbs that you love to eat in no time at all. Also, remember that herbs love to be pruned while they are growing. This will create bushier plants and more herbs to harvest in the long run.
